Is this a good fit?

These come from Illinois permit law.

To qualify for the permit

  • 21 or older
  • A valid driver's license for the last 3 years, with no suspension or revocation in that time
  • No DUI, reckless driving or reckless homicide in the last 3 years
  • No more than one serious traffic violation in the past year
  • A clear fingerprint background check
  • Pass a physical, including vision, hearing, a drug test and a TB test

Probably not for you if

  • You have a recent DUI or several recent tickets
  • You have a criminal record that includes violent, sex, weapons or drug offenses
  • You're looking for an hourly W-2 job with benefits. This is self-employment.
  • You can't commit to driving students on a regular schedule

No CDL is needed for sedans and minivans. Permit holders follow a zero-alcohol rule. Summarized from 625 ILCS 5/6-106.1 and Illinois Secretary of State guidance, October 2026.
